Public Relations or Paid Ads: Why Earned Media Beats Paid Advertising for Restaurants

Unpopular opinion incoming.
I’ve been in #PR long enough to watch brands from #FoodandBeverage to #Hospitality pour six figures into paid media, and STILL lose the narrative to a competitor who simply told a better story, for free. Here’s what I’ve learned from working with 50+ brands on media strategy:
Earned media doesn’t just reach your audience.
It actually convinces them.
A paid ad says “We think we’re great.”
An earned Forbes feature says “Someone else thinks you’re great.”
The numbers back it up. Earned media drives 3x higher trust than paid placements. Organic coverage generates 4x longer engagement time. A single, tier-one feature can do what months of retargeting can’t. Get the picture?
I’m not saying you should fully ditch paid media. I’m saying if your media strategy starts and end at paid, you’re not making an impact; you’re building on rented land.
Owned narrative. Earned authority. That’s the combination that compounds.
What’s your current split? I’m curious, drop it in the comments below and let’s discuss.
